The paper establishes the General Ratchet Impossibility Theorem (GRIT): any process satisfying three axioms—monotonic accumulation, asymmetric reversal costs, and positive feedback—becomes irreversible beyond a critical threshold. The theorem unifies twelve domain-specific ratchet results from biological, institutional, informational, and physical domains.
