Suriname's GDP is roughly $4.4 billion (2024, World Bank), and its economy runs on gold mining (large-scale operators plus widespread artisanal and small-scale mining) alongside an emerging offshore oil sector after the GranMorgu final investment decision in Block 58. With about 93 percent forest cover in the Amazon biome, the most material market failures are mercury contamination and forest degradation from gold mining, deforestation and logging, and the welfare exposure created by the new oil and gas frontier.
